Top civil servant set to stay

Contrary to reports that cabinet secretary Gus O'Donnell was due to resign, his office says he's staying firmly in place

The cabinet secretary Gus O'Donnell is not set to resign his post according to the Cabinet Office and Downing Street.

Both departments have strongly denied that O'Donnell would be leaving after Channel 4 News reported yesterday that he would be stepping down. The report said that O'Donnell wanted to leave after helping the new coalition government settle in.

O'Donnell, who has been cabinet secretary since 2005 was persuaded to stay on after the general election by David Cameron and has steered the way for the new government. After the election O'Donnell said he was "immensely proud of the professional way the cabinet office and civil service have responded to the transition of the coalition government."

A spokesman for the Cabinet Office said: "Gus will remain as cabinet secretary and there are no immediate plans for him to go anywhere."

Inidications are now that Britain's top civil servant is likely to go in the next two years, which would make him the longest holder of his office having served seven years under three different prime ministers.
